Ruth's Journey of Heart Transformation

Angua Ruth Alex

From the outside, Ruth's story looked like one of strong faith. Raised in a Christian home, she grew up attending church, hearing Bible stories, and surrounded by people who loved God. But beneath the surface, she was carrying struggles that few people could see.

Though she knew about God, Ruth wrestled with anger, found it difficult to trust others, and often kept her feelings hidden. Building meaningful relationships was a challenge, and she frequently pushed people away rather than letting them in.

Looking back, Ruth realizes that while faith had always been part of her life, there were areas of her heart she had never fully surrendered to God.

Everything began to change when she joined the Leadership Academy of South Sudan (LASS).

Through LASS's Leadership and Discipleship program, Ruth was challenged to move beyond simply knowing Scripture and begin allowing God's Word to shape her character, decisions, and relationships. For the first time, she started confronting the struggles she had spent years hiding.

One lesson in particular left a lasting impact. As Ruth studied biblical teachings on forgiveness, reconciliation, and managing anger, she was challenged by the instruction not to let anger take root in her heart. Rather than holding onto hurt, she began intentionally choosing patience, forgiveness, and grace.

Over time, those choices transformed her life.

Through the lessons at LASS, Ruth learned how to communicate more openly, build healthier relationships, and extend forgiveness to those who had hurt her. She has grown in confidence, become more willing to listen to others, and discovered a stronger sense of identity in Christ. Most importantly, she learned that true leadership begins with a transformed heart.

Today, friends and classmates know Ruth as someone who is approachable, thoughtful, and eager to serve others. The anger that once shaped many of her reactions has been replaced by greater self-control, understanding, and peace.

Reflecting on her journey, Ruth shares, "The discipleship journey did not just change my behavior—it changed how I think, how I relate to people, and how I walk with God."

Her story is a powerful reminder that discipleship is about more than gaining knowledge. It is about allowing God to heal hidden wounds, shape character, and develop leaders who reflect Christ in the way they live and serve.
