Ivan’s Story: A Journey Fueled by Faith and Technology

When civil war broke out in South Sudan, Ivan was forced to flee with only what he could carry. With no safe passage, Ivan drove three people on a moped for three days straight, navigating dangerous terrain to escape the violence.

Once he reached a refugee settlement in Uganda, Ivan faced a new kind of battle. A daily fight against hunger and homelessness. His uncle, who had fled alongside him, nearly starved to death. “It felt like every day was a fight just to stay alive,” Ivan remembers.

Growing up in the camp, access to technology was nearly impossible. He watched kids in city schools learning about computers while he focused on basic survival. “But I chose not to give up. I believed God had a plan—even when all I had was faith and curiosity.”

A Single Moment Changed Everything

Everything shifted when a local organization brought a few computers to the camp. Ivan’s eyes light up as he recalls that day: “That moment lit a fire in me. I grabbed every opportunity to learn. If I met someone with a laptop, I’d politely ask, ‘Could you show me something new?’”

Before long, people around the camp began calling him ‘”Computer Wizard.” That nickname meant the world to him—it reminded him that he was growing and to keep going.

But the real breakthrough came when Ivan joined the Leadership Academy of South Sudan (LASS). “It felt like God wasn’t just answering my prayers—He was accelerating them,” he shares.

From Survival to Success

At LASS, Ivan found what he’d only dreamed of: access to technology, mentorship, and space to grow. He no longer had to chase down computers—he had full access. He was finally being equipped for the future he envisioned.

With that foundation, Ivan launched his own digital marketing agency—gubaivan.com—right from school. He started helping online businesses grow, putting his new skills to work immediately. When the Builders of Hope Africa club needed a website to showcase their work and raise funds for children’s education, Ivan built it for them.

“That moment made me realize: I don’t just have potential—I have purpose,” he says.

Today, Ivan dreams of owning a tech company. He wants to be the kind of leader who lifts others out of limitation, just like he was lifted. He’s passionate about empowering communities with skills, opportunities, and hope.

Building Tomorrow’s Africa

Ivan is working toward becoming a data scientist—someone who can use information to solve problems and create change. He hopes to help organizations like 4africa use data to make better decisions that impact communities across Africa.

Between classes, he sharpens his coding and web development skills, then teaches what he learns to his classmates. “However, if politics is what God wants me to do for my people, I will also do it,” Ivan says with quiet confidence. For him, leadership isn’t about a job title—it’s about purpose.

Already, Ivan is showing what determination and faith can accomplish. He’s launched a podcast, is developing an app, and runs two small businesses—all while staying focused on using technology to create opportunities for others.

Ivan represents the hope of a new generation that 4africa is investing in—young leaders rising from war and poverty with the vision to rebuild their lives and their country.

“I am from God. I belong to God. And God is with me—every step of this journey.”
