Ssanyu Victoria Elly’s Path to Innovation
As a South Sudanese refugee, Ssanyu Victoria Elly grew up without access to the internet or mentors who could expose her to the world of technology and innovation. Her environment offered few opportunities to dream beyond the basics.
Her trajectory in life radically changed when she was accepted and joined the Leadership Academy of South Sudan (LASS).
Now a Senior Six (second year) at LASS, Ssanyu has discovered more than an academic institution—she became a member of the vibrant, diverse community where ideas and cultures collide in powerful ways. The academy’s rich tribal diversity and its mix of talents, perspectives, and ambitions have played a major role in shaping her personal and intellectual growth. For Ssanyu, this environment sparked something new: a passion for creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
Among the many students who influenced her journey, one fellow classmate stands out—Gai Deng Gai. Together, they identified key challenges faced by students, which led to the creation of DavosLink, a digital learning platform designed to support learners more effectively. The school’s strong internet infrastructure and the ongoing support from ICT teachers played a critical role in turning their vision into reality. Collaborating with Gai and other like-minded peers gave Ssanyu the confidence to break out of her comfort zone and embrace innovation.
For Ssanyu, this experience has been more than a project—it’s been a personal transformation. LASS has provided her with a bounty of knowledge, but more importantly, it has sparked the courage and strength to think boldly and chase innovation fearlessly. Her story is a powerful reminder that when students are given the right environment, support, and skills, they can rise above circumstances and develop solutions that make a real impact.
